Communications-based train control (CBTC), including PTC for main line
freight and passenger railroads, is revolutionizing all modes of
railway transportation, passenger and freight, by adding capacity,
increasing train throughput, enhancing safety, and reducing equipment
life-cycle costs. Railway operators worldwide have been working closely
with suppliers to develop CBTC technology, examples of which are in
revenue service or advanced testing stages. The Eighth International
Conference on Communications-Based Train Control, presented by Railway Age and
Parsons, will focus not only on providing status reports on exciting,
state-of-the CBTC projects and on providing an opportunity to share
information on new initiatives to develop and standardize this
technology for urban and main line rail applications, but will also
look to the future as to how the ongoing revolution in information
system technologies is likely to offer additional safety, security, and
operational benefits to rail transportation users. The conference
format will be a combination of presentations and roundtable
discussions, with many opportunities for conference participants to
provide input. How best to integrate CBTC into established rail
systems? Have the main technical challenges been overcome? What is the
industry doing to promote standardization and compatibility? These
questions and more will be explored.
