Crossings in Ohio and California to see improvements

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission directing CSX Transportation (CSX) and Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway (W&LE) to install flashing lights and gates at three grade crossings.

CSX will install mast-mounted flashing lights and roadway gates at the Feree Road/Township Road 144 (538-739A) grade crossing in Perry Township, Shelby County. The railroad will also install flashing lights and gates at the Liberty West Road/County Road 125 (513-811S) grade crossing in Union County. W&LE will install mast-mounted flashing lights and roadway gates at the Allen Avenue SE (142-854J) grade crossing in Stark County.

The railroads will be responsible for completing construction of these upgrades by July 2013.

Funding for the three Ohio upgrades will be provided by federal funds.

In California, Burbank Public Works Department and Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA), will begin construction work October 22 on a joint project to improve rail crossing safety at Buena Vista Street near Vanowen Street.

The completed project will include new traffic islands, a second left turn lane on Vanowen Street, an entirely new rail crossing gate protection system with four pedestrian protection gates, new rail control systems and a new rail communication system that will be installed by the rail contractor. City staff estimate that the project will take six months to complete.
