This weekend, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) crews are set to continue work on the installation of an Automatic Train Control (ATC) signal system.

TTC said the ATC system will be fully implemented in 2020, providing a more modern and reliable signal system. The implementation of ATC technology will also allow for an boost in the number of trains operating on Line 1, TTC said.

“While the TTC does most subway maintenance at the conclusion of service each night, it continues to require weekend closures to complete ATC and state-of-good-repair work,” TTC said.

Officials explained that one weekend of work during a closure is equal to about five weeks of nightly work.

This is the second of three such closures on this portion of Line 1 in 2018, the commission said.

“The TTC is committed to keeping our customers informed about subway closures and alternative routes,” TTC said.

Officials said customer service representatives will be available to answer questions throughout the weekend, and TTC urged customers to check its social media pages for any additional alerts.

The portion of Line 1 Yonge-University between St Clair West and Union stations will be closed to enable crews to complete this work.

Throughout the closure, express shuttle buses will operate between Spadina and St. Clair West stations.
