CSX Transportation (CSX) has announced that longer, faster trains—and more of them—will travel along an Indiana route as early as Sept. 7.

The developments are expected to boost the capacity and efficiency of trains between Seymour and Butlerville, Ind., enhancing access for manufacturers, farmers and other contributors to the area’s economy.

CSX speeds are set increase from the current limit of 25 mph to a maximum of 40 mph at several locations, and 24 public and private highway-rail at-grade crossings will be affected by the changes.

Officials say CSX has worked in compliance with federal regulations to make signal and track improvements to ensure trains can safely pick up speed. The average length and number of CSX trains in operation will increase and is expected to fluctuate based on rail freight volumes.

CSX officials say these changes work in tandem with recently announced adjustments on the Louisville & Indiana Railroad (LIRC), which also entailed bringing in additional trains at higher speeds along the LIRC between Louisville and Seymour.

The Class 1 is making nearly $100 million in improvements between Indianapolis and Louisville, Ky., to enhance rail access for the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville, increase capacity and efficiency along the corridor and improve connectivity to CSX’s broader network.
