The project includes the installation of new ties, rehabilitation of grade crossings, rehabilitation of two bridges and construction of an industrial siding near Erick. The project will also prepare the track for reclassification from Excepted Track, that is infrequently used, to FRA Class 1 Track, which can be used for low speed mainline service.
The FRA also awarded a Rail Line Relocation and Improvement Capital Program grant to improve a nearly mile long track within the Port of San Francisco in California. Once completed in July 2015, the Quint Street Lead between Oakdale Avenue and Third Street will be upgraded from Industrial Track to Class 1 Track.
The project will also increase the safety and flow of motor vehicle traffic by reducing delays when freight trains entering or exiting the facility block nearby city streets, as well as help avoid potential delays affecting Caltrain commuter rail service.
