Gary Smith has been named rail sector lead for Stantec's freight rail team, accountable for growing Stantec's freight and commuter rail services throughout Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

“I’ve had great experience working with the Stantec rail team in my previous roles,” said Smith. “Stantec is a well-run, multifunctional organization. I’m excited to be on a talented team that can take a project from concept to completion.”

With more than 30 years of railway experience, Smith brings expertise in strategic planning, project development, customer relationships, transportation logistics, grade-crossing safety assessments, container logistics, bulk product handling, pipeline management, rail and facility design, negotiation and practical problem solving.

“Gary is a great addition to our team. We are excited to have him lead our group and apply his extensive experience to growing our rail services across western Canada,” said Richard Lanyi, rail sector lead, Edmonton.

Prior to joining Stantec, Smith was a driving force at Southern Railway of British Columbia. He most recently served as chief engineer and director of engineering services, responsible for all capital projects and growth initiatives for the company. In this position, he also had responsibility for inspection and maintenance of bridges, trestles, structures, signals and communications for the railway, as well as for the Vancouver Island rail infrastructure. He began his career at Canadian National, where he served in various engineering and marketing roles over a 20-year period, including liaising with Transport Canada and other regulatory bodies, coordinating survey staff and designs and guiding industrial customers through CN’s policies, guidelines and construction to achieve successful completion of the rail infrastructure required for their success.
