ICC approves rail spur, two crossing projects

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) issued an order approving construction of a new highway-rail grade rail crossing on Broadway Road in Coal City.

Inland Logistics Port Coal City, LLC, filed a petition with ICC in May seeking authority to construct a new grade crossing so that a new rail spur off the Union Pacific line to serve the new Inland Logistics Port Coal City industrial park can cross Broadway Road. The new rail spur and grade crossing are necessary to support rail-truck transload operations in the industrial park.

Inland Logistics will pay for and install the rail spur line off of Union Pacific’s track, located south of Coal City in Grundy County, automatic flashing light signals and gates at the crossing, improvements to the highway approaches and a crossing surface. The company also will maintain the crossing after work is completed.

ICC railroad staff, Union Pacific and the Grundy County Highway Department supported the rail spur line and grade crossing improvement plans.

ICC also approved an order that provides for public safety improvements to the 2200E Road highway-rail grade crossing of BNSF’s track near Camp Point in Adams County.

ICC approved an expenditure of $482,443 from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) to pay approximately 95 percent of the total cost of the project, which is estimated at $504,051. BNSF will pay the remainder of the installation costs and maintain the grade crossing in the future. The local road district will maintain the highway approaches after the work is completed.

The work will include installation of flashing light signals and gates, controlled by constant warning timed circuitry, improvements to the existing highway approaches to the crossing and installation of temporary stop signs at the crossing.
