Union Pacific employees hit safety records

Union Pacific says employees made gains toward the company's ultimate goal of zero incidents, setting second-quarter and year-to-date safety performance records.

UP’s employees achieved a 0.81 reportable injury rate for the second-quarter, improving 19 percent over the same period last year. Year-to-date, employees recorded a 0.82 reportable injury rate, compared to 1.06 year-to-date in 2014.

The railroad attributes the rate to employees’ dedication to Courage to Care – a personal commitment to provide feedback to fellow employees to mitigate unsafe situations and to have the courage to accept feedback from co-workers.

Additionally, thousands of employees systemwide participated in a Safety Stand Down in April, stopping work to assess risk and opportunities for improvement in individual work areas. A second stand down is being planned for October.
