Union Pacific plans to invest $114 million to improve Nebraska and Missouri's infrastructure.

In Nebraska, a $102-million investment will enhance employee, community and customer safety and increase rail operating efficiency. The funds include nearly $90 million to maintain railroad track, nearly $8 million to enhance signal systems and $4 million to maintain or replace bridges in the state.

Key projects include an $8.5-million investment in the rail line between the Nebraska/Kansas border and Gibbon to replace nearly 53,500 concrete ties in various locations and a $7.2-million investment in the rail line between Silver Creek and Grand Island to replace the track bed with 144,000 tons of ballast.

In Missouri, the railroad plans to invest more than $12 million in the rail line between Marshall and near Jefferson City. The project began April 6 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of May.

The railroad will replace 82,600 ties, install 45,700 tons of ballast, replace nearly one-quarter mile of rail in various curves and repair the surfaces at 84 road crossings.

Union Pacific plans to spend $4.2 billion across its network this year, following investments totaling more than $31 billion from 2005-2014. In the past couple of weeks, the railroad announced other work in Missouri, as well as Colorado, Illinois and Iowa.
