The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) presented the 2014 Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence to Union Pacific for its Santa Teresa Terminal project in New Mexico.

The 2,200-acre site, which opened April 1, 2014, will create value for UP customers and produce greater logistics efficiencies along UP’s critical Sunset Route, the rail line running 760 miles from El Paso, Texas, to Los Angeles, Calif.

Located just west of the Santa Teresa Airport, UP’s Santa Teresa rail facility includes a fueling station, crew change buildings and an intermodal ramp with an annual lift capacity of around 225,000 containers.

Construction of the site was completed one year ahead of schedule, created 3,000 jobs during the building phase and is expected to create an economic impact to the state of more than $500 million.

This is the 16th year for the Hay award, which recognizes an outstanding achievement in railroad engineering and honors the memory of Dr. William Hay. The 2014 contest had three entries that were judged on three requirements: innovation, safety and project reliability.
