The province of Quebec awarded a contract to CANARAIL to perform a feasibility study of a new 310-kilometer (192-mile) long railway from Sept-Iles to the Labrador Trough.

CANARAIL will act as the prime contractor for this study, which will cover technical, economic and financial aspects. The final report is expected at the end of 2015.

The Quebec government and Lac Otelnuk Mining Ltd. Formed a partnership with Champion Iron Limited to study rail feasibility in the corridor. Quebec has budgeted CA$20 million (US$18 million) from its Plan Nord Fund to contribute to the study.

“CANARAIL performs this kind of study everywhere in the world, but this one has a special flavor to it since it will be here, in Quebec, where our team of experts will put all of its experience into a major economic development project,” said CANRAIL President and Chief Executive Officer Miguel Valero.
