Reading & Northern Railroad has increased the track speed of its Main Line between Reading, Penn., and Port Clinton to 40 mph.

The railroad said this is the first time in 25 years track speeds have increased to this level and that the increase marks a major efficiency improvement on the line, cutting seven minutes from the travel time between the two locations.

“This does not sound like much, but as we continue to upgrade over the entire 115-mile Main Line, this will result in substantial productivity increases. Raising speeds requires quality track, annual X-ray of rail, and many other things to be done to achieve this milestone,” the railroad said in a statement.

Reading & Northern is in the midst of a significant capital spending program as it explained in early November, “Our maintenance-of-way forces have been extremely busy upgrading our railroad to handle more traffic at higher speeds. Our MOW forces have also been hard at work on our accelerated track maintenance program by installing 15,000 ties, 10,000 feet of new rail, constructing 10,000 feet of new sidings and surfacing 89 miles of track.”
