Watco Transportation Services has promoted Ron Martin to vice president of transportation safety and training and Michael Smith to director of engineering safety and training.

Martin has been with Watco for 15 years, giving him a special insight on promoting safety and managing team member training and Watco’s railroads and switching locations. He will provide assistance and guidance with regulatory record keeping requirements for each location and work with railroads to manager Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) certification programs and other required programs to ensure a well-training and qualified workforce.

Martin joined Watco in 1999 and has served in the positions of track foreman, conductor, engineer, switching location manager, trainmaster, general manager, regional safety manager and director transportation training.

Smith will work closely with the engineering team to develop and produce training materials. He will be responsible for ensuring that all required track/engineering training is completed across the Watco system and meets FRA requirements. He will also manage track training coordinators, conduct training and handle training documentation for the Engineering Department.

Smith began working for Watco in 2012 as an assistant roadmaster for the Birmingham Terminal Railway and was promoted to track training specialist prior to assuming the role of director.
