Officials broke ground on a new rail park hailed as a potentially transformational project for central New Mexico.

Los Lunas Councilor Gino M. Romero, Bernalillo County Commission Chair Art De La Cruz and other community leaders took place in the ceremony Dec. 28 at the Central New Mexico Rail Park, which could transform New Mexico’s transportation and logistics industry while creating thousands of jobs.

The Central New Mexico Rail Park is located west of Los Lunas near the BNSF Railway, a major connection between southern California, Chicago and places along the way.

Developers aim to create a new warehouse, manufacturing and distribution center on more than 400 acres of undeveloped land along N.M. 6.

“The Central New Mexico Rail Park has the potential to become a transformational project for Central New Mexico, creating jobs throughout the region and connecting major markets across the country,” Village of Los Lunas Councilor Gino M. Romero says. “I want to thank our colleagues on the Bernalillo County Commission for having the vision and the foresight to invest in a regional project that will help our economy.”

Earlier this month the Bernalillo County Commission approved a memorandum of understanding that would reimburse the Village of Los Lunas up to $400,000 for a rail spur between the rail park and an existing rail line.

The project is being developed by RIO Real Estate Investment Opportunities, LLC.

“Creating new jobs and more economic opportunity has been my No. 1 priority over the past eight years, and this project has already delivered now that construction crews have broken ground,” Bernalillo County Commission Chair Art De La Cruz says. “Construction workers, truck drivers, warehouse employees and many more will find meaningful work at the Central New Mexico Rail Park. I look forward to watching this rail park expand to include manufacturing in future years.”
