Kansas City Southern says a tentative opening date of July 11, 2015, has been set for its new, state-of-the-art intermodal facility in Wylie, Texas.

Construction on the Wylie Intermodal Terminal (WIT) began in 2014 and the first two bridge cranes were assembled and installed the week of May 18. Once the facility goes online, KCS plans to cease operations of the Zacha Intermodal Terminal. The railroad said the benefits of the transition from Zacha to WIT are “increased capacity, improved safety and security and enhanced shipment mobility and fluidity.”

With an annual lift capacity of 342,000 units, WIT will have more than double the lift capacity of Zacha. Additionally, WIT will have two, 5,000-foot intermodal tracks, enhanced traffic signals, 1,500 parking spaces (40 percent greater than Zacha) and an Automated Gate System with high definition imagery, optical character recognition and biometric driver identification.
