The New York Susquehanna & Western Railroad Corporation (NYS&W) has received contract approval for more than $900,000 in funding for design and construction of a multimodal rail terminal in Cortland as part of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's Regional Council initiative.

This project will enhance NYS&W’s ability to move cargo in and out of the Cortland area, benefiting several local companies and boosting economic activity in the area.

The Cortland Transload Terminal Improvement will construct a rail terminal, which will allow short-haul trucks to load and unload directly onto rail cars, which will enhance the movement of goods between rail and trucks and enhance overall operational efficiency in the Cortland area. The project will consist of the construction of three siding tracks just south of NYS&W’s Cortland spur line, as well as the infrastructure required to enable containers to be transferred between rail cars and trucks. This new facility will be built near Pendleton Road, in the southern portion of the city of Cortland.

“Controlling the costs of shipping is a vital priority in today’s marketplace,” said NYS&W President Nathan Fenno. “The Cortland Transload Terminal will enable Central New York Region businesses to address the cost of shipping by taking advantage of the efficiencies of rail transportation without having to be located next to the railroad. The goal of the facility is to help local business save money, increase flexibility and improve reliability. Consequently, the more freight that moves by rail, the less we move by long-haul trucks. So, by expanding the access to rail freight, the Cortland Transload Terminal will help to decrease greenhouse emissions and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.”
