A project to develop a railroad transshipment center at the regional industrial park in Saint-Tite, Quebec has been awarded funds from the Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED).

The CA$847,378 (US$671,382) in support of the center comes from CED’s Quebec Economic Development Program. CED says the funding will allow the regional county municipality of Mékinac (MRC) to carry out various aspects of construction work, including moving and extending the railway, site development, paving and the installation of infrastructure for site security (fences, access barriers, streetlights).

The Mékinac MRC contains 10 municipalities. In 1996, these municipalities decided to create a regional industrial park on land adjacent to the main regional Canadian National rail line. Development work will take place on 34,217 square meters (8.45 acres) of land in order to operate the transshipment center.

Officials said many innovative small and medium-sized businesses in the region would benefit from this large-scale project, which will result in better access to national and foreign markets for their procurement and deliveries.

“Mékinac MRC is creating a distinctive asset that will be a strategic advantage for companies and for economic development in the region,” said Bernard Thompson, warden, Mékinac MRC.
