Michael Baker Jr., Inc., has been awarded a two-year, multimillion-dollar contract to provide construction management and construction inspection (CM/CI) services for the expansion of Norfolk Southern's Rutherford Intermodal Facility near Harrisburg, Pa., which will double the capacity of the current facility.

The scope of the project includes 405,000 cubic yards of earthwork, sub-grade preparation for track building, drainage structures, 84,000 square yards of roller compacted concrete, mechanically stabilized earth wall, cast-in-place concrete retaining wall, a reinforced soil slope wall, various utility installations, high-mast lighting, security equipment and stormwater management features.

Baker will be working with the NS Maintenance of Way and Structures Department to coordinate the installation of 37 switches, 46,000 feet of track and 47,000 tons of ballast. Furthermore, the project will take place within the existing intermodal facility and, together with the railroad’s Construction Department, Baker will oversee and coordinate the construction during active Norfolk Southern railroad operations.
