Two Indiana-based transportation companies, the Indiana Rail Road (INRD) and Venture Logistics, celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 24 at the new Venture Rail Warehouse and Distribution Center on Indianapolis’ south side.

Described as the launch of “a new era in central Indiana logistics,” the 406,000 square-foot warehouse is said to be Marion County’s newest rail-served mega-warehouse in decades.

INRD will serve as the exclusive rail service provider for the facility, and officials say the Venture Logistics fleet is comprised of 1,000 truck tractors and 2,500 trailers. The new facility features 15 indoor rail car spots, 58 truck dock doors, a 32-foot clear ceiling and 8-inch cement floors and is food grade, representatives say.

“With our fast and efficient connections to the North American rail network, and Venture’s deep bench of trucking industry experience, the warehouse is garnering attention from companies interested in the combined efficiencies of long-haul rail and regional trucking,” said INRD President and CEO Peter Mills. “We’re very excited to have this partnership with another Indiana-based company that, like INRD, has a reputation for superior customer service and an entrepreneurial mindset.”

Representatives of both companies say the warehouse is “a game-changer in the logistics landscape” because central Indiana’s current rail-served warehouse inventory includes small buildings with low ceilings. The two companies also plan to provide various services, including multiple rail switches per day—based on volume—along with “state-of-the-art” warehouse inventory and management systems.

“Venture Logistics and [INRD] have a great mutual respect and appreciation for one another’s ability to serve the customer, and we both have a deep understanding of the marketplace,” said Greg Eddy, president and CEO of Venture Logistics. “The Venture Rail Warehouse has been sorely needed in this market for quite some time, and we’re very excited about the future of this partnership.”

Representatives from the companies say a neighboring property to the Venture Rail Warehouse has been secured for a second warehouse to be opened based on the success of the new facility. The potential second warehouse could reach a square footage of more than 500,000 feet, officials say.
