Amtrak schedules track work in Empire Corridor

Written by jrood

Beginning Monday, June 21, the schedule for Amtrak trains operating between Niagara Falls, Albany-Rensselaer and New York will be adjusted to accommodate track work and engineering projects. The temporary schedule changes are designed to ensure Amtrak trains continue to operate without lengthy delays.

Scheduling changes are
due to planned improvements on the right of way on the Empire Corridor,
including improving drainage ditches, grading and profiling; trash and
materials removal; and fence replacement along selected areas.

While the Metro-North
Railroad track work project near Poughkeepsie is complete, new work to improve
the tracks near Yonkers and along the Empire Connection to New York is scheduled
to begin June 21 and will continue through November 21, 2010. Track work continues
to be performed by CSX Transportation along the Albany to Buffalo route.

The schedule adjustment
will affect Amtrak’s Empire Service (New York – Albany – Niagara Falls) as well
as the Adirondack (New York – Albany – Montreal); the Ethan Allen Express (New
York – Albany – Rutland): and the Maple Leaf (New York – Albany – Toronto).

During the track work,
some stretches of railroad will only be able to accommodate one train at a time.
