BART earthquake safety construction set at Concord, Daley City stations

Written by jrood

As part of BART's system-wide Earthquake Safety Program, the agency will begin strengthening structures at the Concord and Daley City stations to withstand future earthquakes.

* Description: Constructing
temporary enclosures, thickening of columns, adding steel and concrete to
foundations, reinforcing platform canopies, limited asbestos and lead-based
paint removal (following all protocols), and protecting utilities and
equipment.

* Location: 8 columns throughout
the station, stairs, escalators, platform and other locations.

The work will start in
mid-July 2010 and last approximately one year.

A separate project to
strengthen columns along nearby streets is expected to begin in August 2010 and
last approximately two-and-a-half years.

Also, the agency has begun
strengthening structures at the Daly City Station to withstand future
earthquakes. The work requires temporary relocation of some of the bicycle
lockers and bicycle racks. In approximately four months, construction in the
area will be complete, and the bicycle lockers and racks will be returned to
their original locations.

Earthquake Safety Program
construction will be under way at various locations throughout the BART system
over the next four years and is expected to be complete by the end of 2014.
