Caltrain construction, maintenance update Oct. 3-9

Written by jrood

The new Mission Bay Drive crossing in San Francisco is scheduled to open to pedestrian and vehicle traffic Oct. 7. The crossing will provide access to Mission Bay residential neighborhoods and eventually, to the UCSF Mission Bay campus from the west side of The City. The new Caltrain grade crossing is wider than most because it crosses three tracks instead of the usual two tracks. There is a pedestrian crossing on the south side of the grade crossing that includes safety gates with emergency swing gates, tactile warning strips, sidewalks and pavement markings. There is no pedestrian crossing on the north side of grade crossing.

Work on Caltrain’s Grade
Crossing Improvement Program, which will enhance safety at 25 grade crossings
in San Mateo County, will continue at Fair Oaks Lane and Watkins Avenue in
Atherton and at Oak Grove Avenue in Menlo Park. The work will take place from
Oct. 4-8, between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. Throughout the project area, at least one
lane of the impacted street will remain open. Flagmen will direct traffic and
pedestrians around the construction.

Work continues on a $2.8-million
project to add additional signals to the Caltrain signal system.

A $2.1-million project to
improve the radio communications system that operates the signals and switches
on the railroad tracks is underway. The project will add a second radio
channel, which will increase the system’s capacity. Work will take place Oct. 5-9
between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 4 a.m. at several locations near the Diridon
and Tamien stations in San Jose.

Oct. 4-8, crews will weld
and grind the switches, and replace worn asphalt, rails, ties and ballast on
the tracks between the South San Francisco and San Mateo stations.

Caltrain will repair the
signals at the Broadway grade crossing in Burlingame from 11 a.m., Friday, Oct.
2 to 11 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3. The repairs include removing and replacing an
overhead signal structure damaged in an earlier accident. Although the
westbound lane of Broadway will remain open, the eastbound lane will be closed
during the construction. Eastbound traffic will be directed to use Oak Grove
Avenue (south of the crossing) or Millbrae Avenue (north of the crossing).
Flagmen will direct traffic and pedestrians around the construction.

On Oct. 4, crews will weld
and grind the switches and replace worn asphalt, rails, ties and ballast on the
tracks near the San Jose station.
