Written by jrood

The Los Angeles Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority will host a workshop Sept. 15 to inform small businesses about the more than $600 million in contracting opportunities available during construction of the light-rail transit line from Pasadena to Azusa. Presentations by Construction Authority Chief Executive Officer Habib Balian and others will include information about the project, as well as the opportunities for small businesses and a procurement schedule.

The workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the
Doubletree Hotel, 924 W. Huntington Drive, in Monrovia, Calif. Admission is
free, but reservations are required. Please call (714) 973-1335 or visit
www.foothillextension.org to reserve a seat and learn more about the workshop
and the project. An industry workshop will be held in late September for firms
to learn about the design-build contracting opportunities for construction of
the Foothill Extension.

The Foothill Extension
is set to receive funding from the voter-approved Measure R half-cent sales
tax, when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) board of directors
approves its Long Range Transportation Plan. Consideration of the plan is
scheduled for September. Construction of the 11-mile extension is scheduled to
begin in June 2010.

The Metro Gold Line
Foothill Extension Construction Authority is an independent transportation
planning and construction agency created in 1998 by the California State
Legislature. Its purpose is to extend the Metro Gold Line (which opened to
Pasadena in 2003) eastward to Montclair, enhancing the transportation
experience of commuters in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
The Metro Gold Line light rail system opened in 2003, connecting downtown Los
Angeles to Pasadena. The success of the system’s first phase led cities east of
Pasadena to pursue a 24-mile extension from Pasadena to Montclair. Funds from
Los Angeles County Measure R half-cent sales tax increase (approved in November
2008) will be available for the construction of Foothill Extension from Sierra
Madre Villa station in Pasadena to Azusa, beginning in 2010. Environmental
planning and development is under way for the segment from Azusa to Montclair,
eventually continuing to LA/Ontario International Airport.
