Hampton Roads: A vision for regional transit

Written by jrood

Hampton Roads Transit, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority invite the public to two meetings on the region's long-range transit vision plan.

The Hampton Roads
Regional Transit Vision Plan is a look into the future of transit – 2025 and
beyond – to imagine what may be possible for the region’s transit services. The
plan considers a variety of transit modes – everything from an expanded light
rail system, streetcar service, bus rapid transit, commuter and higher-speed
rail connections, high-speed ferry, to express and enhanced bus services.

The idea is to see what
mode may make the most sense for a given community or corridor. Participants
will have an opportunity to ask questions, view presentations, and share their
thoughts and ideas about the best path to follow.

One meeting will be
held on November 30 and the other December 1.

The vision acknowledges the
importance of land-use planning to promote transit with an eye toward
connecting the region’s major employment centers. The plan emphasizes the
importance of mixed-use development to support transit services and safe and
convenient pedestrian conditions. The plan will help regional and local
government select projects for further study.
