Hatch Mott MacDonald providing Grand Central construction management

Written by jrood

Hatch Mott MacDonald is providing construction management services for Metro-North Railroad for an $18.9 million design/build project at Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project will convert an interior space from its previous use as a tennis club to facilities for Metro-North train crews, fire brigade crews and building services staff. The current facilities for the train and fire brigade crews and building services staff have outlived their useful life and are in need of substantial upgrade. This project will relocate the crews and staff members to a better location with updated accommodations.

Part of the construction that
HMM is managing is removal of a portion of Grand Central Terminal’s Monumental
Window on the southwest corner of the building. Removal of the window will
allow for worker access and a path to supply material to the project site. This
was anticipated by MNR, which received early approval of this concept from the
State Historic Preservation Office in New York. The window is to be carefully
removed, labeled, documented, and stored off site. It is to be re-installed at
the end of the project.

The construction management services
are being led by HMM Senior Vice President Norman Rhodes and Senior Project
Manager Neal O’Connor. HMM will be assisted by two sub-consultants- Hill
International, Inc., and A.G. Consulting Engineering, P.C.

HMM has undertaken a number
of other major projects for MNR at Grand Central Terminal. The most recent
involved upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems, which included
emergency lighting, public address, stairwell pressurization, control center
ventilation, and transformer house upgrades.
