The Oklahoma City Council has selected Herzog/Stacy and Witbeck to install the rail for the Oklahoma City Streetcar.

Representatives say the Herzog/Stacy and Witbeck bid is about $50 million, roughly $7 million less than the projected construction budget.

Construction is set to begin in January 2017. The OKC Streetcar is intended to connect the downtown area to Bricktown and other local districts and is funded by the MAPS 3 Modern Streetcar/Transit project.

“The work our residents will start seeing as construction begins is the first step to building a modern intermodal public transit system for downtown Oklahoma City,” said Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett. “The MAPS 3 Citizens Advisory Board, the streetcar subcommittee, City staff and consultants have put in years of hard work on this project, and it will be exciting to see the finished product.”

Representatives say the installation of rail and other infrastructure is expected to take place over the course of about two years, with Brookville Equipment Corporation building the modernized streetcars.

The OKC Streetcar will operate on rails embedded in the concrete on street-level in regular traffic lanes, and each streetcar will be operated by a driver following the same speed limits and traffic signals as other vehicles.

Lane and street closures are expected to affect downtown-area traffic during construction.
