In memoriam: Bob Grandy

Written by Kyra Senese, Managing Editor

Robert “Bob” Grandy, retired president of Unity Railway Supply Co., Inc., died Oct. 18, 2016, at age 82.

Grandy worked in the railway supply industry for more than 50 years and was seen as instrumental in the growth and success of the railway supply industry.

Grandy was well-known and respected by those who knew and worked closely with him,  and his former colleagues say they will certainly miss him.  He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ferguson Grandy, his four children and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Hinsdale, Ill., resident in his adult life, Grandy graduated from Fairview High School in Fairview Park, Ohio, in 1952. He attended college at Stanford and Cornell universities prior to enlisting in the army.

He was not sent overseas, and was stationed at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind., where he served his commitment. Although he was initially interested in advertising, Grandy ended up happily, and successfully, in the railway supply business.

Grandy’s family says his passions included collecting and using his favorite tools, baking and spending time with his sons in the Boundary Water Canoe Area, which the three first visited in 1979.
