Maine governor sets railway task force

Maine's Governor Baldacci has created a task force to look into saving railroad services in Aroostook County, local media report. Earlier this week, Maine lawmakers approved a bond measure that sets aside $7,000,000 to purchase and preserve about 240 miles of track in Northern Maine.

The track is currently
owned by the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway. The company announced in
February that they were abandoning the tracks.

If those tracks close, an
estimated 1,700 jobs in the state are on the line.

The railroad runs from
Madawaska to Millinocket.

Last week, Governor
Baldacci, Senator Collins, and other state leaders met with the Federal
Railroad Administration to discuss saving the tracks.
