North County Transit schedules tie work

Written by jrood

On Nov. 19-20, North County transit District crews will replace railroad ties along the COASTER track in the Del Mar, Calif., area. After the new ties are placed, train traffic will slow for 24 hours to allow the track to settle and stabilize. A few days later, a large truck will travel by rail to carry away the old ties.

Throughout
both nights, several pieces of heavy machinery will navigate the track as part of
the tie removal and replacement process. This work is done at night to
alleviate disruption to daytime rail schedules. NCTD assures the work will be
completed as quickly as possible.

This
project is part of a normal cycle of railroad maintenance, which includes the
periodic replacement of aging wooden ties before they fail to hold the rails in
alignment. As many as 10,000 ties will be replaced along the COASTER corridor
by mid-December. Some of these NCTD ties have been in place since the mid
1920s.

The
North County Transit District is a public transportation agency providing 12
million passenger trips annually throughout North San Diego County and into
downtown San Diego. NCTD’s system includes BREEZE buses, COASTER commuter
trains, SPRINTER light rail trains, and LIFT paratransit service.
