Officials say rust on Norfolk Light Rail tracks is not hazardous

Officials say rust gathering on Norfolk, Va., Light Rail tracks is not a problem, local media report. The sight is concerning some people, especially since Norfolk's Light Rail project is over budget and behind schedule.

Hampton Roads Transit
officials assure residents that the rust they see is from the steel’s exposure
to air and water and will likely be brushed off once the trains start regularly
running on the tracks.

"The type of steel that’s
used is a regular railroad type steel. It’s not like a stainless steel that someone
might have on their kitchen appliance," said Tom Holden, HRT.

Holden says the first
passenger trains will start running in May 2011. The heavy construction of the
tracks through downtown Norfolk could end as early as this summer.
