Union Pacific will improve Nebraska's transportation infrastructure with a more than $20 million investment to improve the rail line that runs from west of Grand Island, Neb., to Gibbon, Neb. Work on the nearly 25-mile stretch of railroad track began June 20 and is scheduled to be completed in late July.

The project includes
removing and installing new rail and more than 64,500 concrete ties. Crews also
will spread more than 84,000 tons of rock ballast to reinforce the roadbed,
renew the roadway surfaces at 26 crossings and install six switches.

Union Pacific will use a
modern track renewal train, the TRT 909, which installs rail and concrete ties
in one pass.

Union Pacific plans to
spend approximately $2.6 billion in 2010 to enhance the safety and efficiency
of the railroad’s 32,000-mile network.
