UTA’s FrontLines honored for Infrastructure Project of the Year

October has special significance for the International Right of Way Association (IRWA), whose 10,000 members play a vital role in advancing the nation's transportation, water and energy infrastructure projects. October is International Right of Way Month, and in acknowledging the industry's role in bringing essential infrastructure projects to life, IRWA launched a Project of the Year Competition.

The 2010 Project of the
Year was awarded to the Utah Transit Authority FrontLines Program of Projects,
deemed one of the biggest, most aggressive and successful rail expansion
programs in the country. Earlier this year, Forbes magazine singled out Salt
Lake City, Utah, as the best city in the U.S. for commuters and credits the
state’s investment in transportation infrastructure for the top ranking.

"We are excited to
share the impact of our profession with the public," noted IRWA
International President Kenneth Davis, SR/WA. "Right of way professionals
play a leading role in facilitating key infrastructure projects. These
monumental projects often employ thousands of professionals over many years. We
have all seen first-hand how a new highway or bridge can literally transform a
community, and we take great pride in making such fundamental conveniences a
reality."

According to IRWA Executive
Vice President Mark Rieck, the diversity of projects entered into the competition
speaks volumes. "Right-of-way professionals are a multi-disciplined group
encompassing many different industry segments. From selecting and surveying
sites, to securing government approvals and negotiating property rights, these
highly-trained specialists have valuable skills that are crucial to the success
of each project," said Mark.

In September, a panel of
industry experts selected the Top 10 projects: Utah Transit Authority
FrontLines Program (winner); San Diego Water Authority’s Emergency Storage
Project; Oklahoma Interstate 44 Improvement Project; Los Angeles Unified School
District New Construction Program; Central Puget Sound Regional Transit
Authority Link Light Rail; City of Aurora, Colorado, Prairie Waters Project; Texas
State Highway 130 Segments 1-6; ExxonMobil’s Surface Acquisition Project in
Jakarta, Indonesia; UNEV Pipeline Project, Salt Lake City to North Las Vegas; Panama
City Int’l Airport Relocation/Reopening as New Northwest Florida Beaches Int’l
Airport.
