"The Vandeventer Bridge project has been designed to be completed with as little impact as possible on our MetroLink riders and vehicular traffic, and we remain committed to this goal," said Ray Friem, chief operating officer of transit services for Metro.
The Vandeventer Bridge currently supports two rail tracks for MetroLink and a third track for freight use. Metro is replacing the 80-year-old bridge, which is experiencing significant settling and deterioration. Currently supported by four piers, the new Vandeventer Bridge will feature a single support pier that will allow for a smoother flow of vehicular traffic along Vandeventer Avenue and provide a stabilized structure that will continue to support MetroLink. Construction of the new Vandeventer Bridge and streetscape is scheduled for completion during early spring of 2010.
As the project continues, Vandeventer Avenue will remain closed, and motorists are encouraged to detour around the area using Chouteau Avenue, Grand Avenue, and Forest Park Avenue. The project is one of several Metro will be working on during the next year to enhance the transit system so that it continues to serve as a vehicle to move the region forward.
