Weekend renovation on D.C. Metro’s Red and Orange Lines

Written by jrood

Dec. 3-5, Metro in Washington, D.C., will upgrade its track and stations to improve long-term reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, trains on the Red and Orange lines will be single-tracking, and riders should expect their trips to take up to 30 minutes longer than usual.

Red Line Track Maintenance
and Station Improvements.

Metrorail customers traveling between the
Friendship Heights and Van Ness-UDC Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to
their travel times because Metro will replace fasteners and repair tunnel leaks.
Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. Friday, Dec.
3, to closing on Sunday, Dec. 5.

Metrorail customers traveling between the
New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood
Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time to allow
personnel to make track and station improvements that will help improve
reliable service through that area. Trains will share one track between these
locations the entire weekend.

This portion of vital work on the Red Line
between the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island
Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail stations is part of the Red Line rehabilitation
project, which is extending the life cycle of the track and related systems by
rebuilding those areas.

Orange Line Rail
Replacement and Installation.

Metrorail customers traveling between the New
Carrollton and Cheverly Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to
their travel time to allow Metro to replace install new crossties and to weld
new rail on the tracks in that area to keep them in a state of good repair.
Trains will share one track between these locations all weekend.
