Officials imagine that an
active spur, being funded with an almost $5-million federal stimulus grant,
will improve the attractiveness of Calverton to business people while taking
trucks off Long Island highways. The spur, which runs along Connecticut Avenue,
has gone unused since the Northrop Grumman Corporation occupied the park, and
has since fallen into disrepair.
The spur will be operated by New York and Atlantic Railways, a private freight rail company that currently has the contract with LIRR for freight service on Long Island.
