Work on LIRR spur could start in March

A New Jersey-based company was awarded a $3.49-million construction contract to rebuild the Long Island Rail Road rail spur that leads into the Calverton, N.Y., Enterprise Park and hopes to get working on the railroad in March, local media report. The Riverhead Town Board awarded the contract to Railroad Construction Co. Inc., of Paterson, the lowest bidder. The highest bid came in at $6.7 million.

Officials imagine that an
active spur, being funded with an almost $5-million federal stimulus grant,
will improve the attractiveness of Calverton to business people while taking
trucks off Long Island highways. The spur, which runs along Connecticut Avenue,
has gone unused since the Northrop Grumman Corporation occupied the park, and
has since fallen into disrepair.

The spur will be operated
by New York and Atlantic Railways, a private freight rail company that
currently has the contract with LIRR for freight service on Long Island.
