Caltrain has announced that its board of directors last week approved the agency’s plans to develop a mobile ticketing application.

The Caltrain board of directors approved an estimated budget of $643,733 at Caltrain’s monthly meeting for a two-year contract with the moovel Group to develop, maintain and host an app to enable customers to purchase tickets on their mobile phones. Founded by Daimler, moovel says it aims to provide options to better connect urban areas.

Caltrain expects passengers to have access to the technology by this summer. Users will have the option to purchase One-way, Day Pass and Zone Upgrade fares. Additional options may be available in the future, such as daily parking permits and components for trip planning and real-time information on service updates.

The app will be compatible with iOS and Android operating systems and will accept forms of payment including major credit cards, debit cards and commuter benefit cards.

Representatives say the contract also included the option to extend services for an additional three years.

Caltrain says it is excited to create an advanced ticketing system to match the innovations it’s working to make on its rail network.

“Caltrain serves the most innovative region in the nation, so we know the system’s passengers are enthusiastic about the opportunity for technology to make riding Caltrain more convenient,” said José Cisneros, chair of Caltrain’s board of directors. “Mobile ticketing  is just one way Caltrain is stepping forward to improve the  customer experience.”
