Caltrain has announced that John Funghi will serve as chief officer of the Caltrain Modernization Program.

Based in California, Funghi is an engineer who has managed major construction projects in the public sector and as a construction contractor. After a transition period set to take place throughout the next few months, Funghi will begin his new position Feb. 1, 2018.

Caltrain said Funghi has worked for the past 18 years for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. He also served for the past 11 years as the Central Subway program director, managing the delivery of the $1.6 billion Central Subway project in downtown San Francisco.

The Central Subway project has been recognized for its innovative approaches to construction and community engagement throughout the transportation industry, Caltrain noted.

“We are excited to be adding a professional of John’s caliber to our already exceptional team,” said Caltrain Executive Director Jim Hartnett. “John’s established relationships with the Federal Transit Administration, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, San Francisco and other regional partners will ensure a smooth transition to the Caltrain Modernization Program.”

“I want to thank John Funghi, a nationally-regarded project manager, for leading the Central Subway Project from early design and outreach to actual tunnel and station construction,” said Ed Reiskin, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) director of Transportation.

Reiskin added that while Funghi’s leadership would be missed, SFMTA wishes him the best and will see to it that his work at the transportation agency is carried out successfully.

“The Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project is vital to this region and these two projects will have had a strong leader who understands the importance of world-class transportation for all, and how to get it done,” Reiskin said.
