Hennepin County, Minn., breaks ground on the Interchange project

Hennepin County, Minn., broke ground on its multi-million dollar Interchange project.
“This is another landmark day in the creation of the Twin Cities transit system for the 21st Century,” Hennepin County Commissioner and Regional Railroad Authority Chair Peter McLaughlin said. “The Interchange will be the busiest rail transit hub in Minnesota.”
Numerous elected officials and project supporters gathered at the site of the future Interchange, located adjacent to Target Field. Once construction is completed in 2014, the Interchange will be an urban park, transit station and neighborhood gathering space.
“The Interchange will be a signature piece of public infrastructure,” Hennepin County Board Chair Mike Opat said.
This multi-modal transportation hub will connect approximately 500 trains arriving and departing daily via Twin Cities Metro Transit’s METRO Blue Line, Green Line and Northstar Commuter Rail, as well as more than 1,900 daily bus trips and miles of bike and walking trails.
Utility work will begin on-site July 10 and in the following weeks the beginning of site clearing and other related activities will occur.
