Kevin Corbett has been nominated to serve as NJ Transit’s next executive director.

The New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) board is set to consider New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy's nomination of Kevin Corbett to serve as the public transportation system's executive director at its next meeting.

The governor nominated Corbett for the role, saying in a statement: “We can no longer continue to accept the dismal business as usual at an agency that so many commuters throughout New Jersey depend on.”

“We cannot continue to wake up in the morning fearing reliability and safety on our commutes. I am confident that Kevin’s leadership can help turn NJ Transit into a transportation system that our commuters value and trust,” Gov. Murphy said.

Corbett currently serves as vice president of Cross Services at AECOM. While at AECOM, Corbett has overseen major projects such as Amtrak’s Gateway Project, the first phase of New York City’s Second Avenue Subway project, work on New York Penn Station and restoration work after Superstorm Sandy.

Gov. Murphy recently signed an executive order that mandates an audit of NJ Transit to evaluate ways the agency can improve service.

As the system’s new executive director, officials said Corbett will help to implement Gov. Murphy’s recommendations and modify NJ Transit’s finances, leadership structure, customer service and safety protocols.

“It is an honor to be nominated to lead NJ Transit, and I am excited to get to work and make the agency safer and more reliable for New Jersey residents,” Corbett said. “Our location is a tremendous asset, one that creates many opportunities for transportation. I look forward to starting the process of rebuilding NJ Transit so that we can reach our enormous untapped potential. I am excited to work with Governor Murphy on making his vision for NJ Transit a reality.”

Prior to joining AECOM, Corbett held the title of the chief operating officer and executive vice president of Empire State Development Corporation, officials said. He has served as executive deputy commissioner of the Department of Economic Development, as well.

In his previous positions, Corbett managed the state of New York’s economic development programs and projects, which included the redevelopment of Times Square and the delivery of Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Corbett currently serves as co-chair of the Regional Plan Association’s Transportation Committee, officials noted. He is also board president of the Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey, in addition to serving on the Tri-State Transportation Campaign and working as a chairman of The New York League of Conservation Voters.

Corbett was also previously a fellow at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He is an alumnus of Georgetown University and serves as a Blue and Gold Officer for the U.S. Naval Academy.
