Rail transit consultants LTK Engineering Services (LTK) announced Aug. 15 it has begun work for the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) on a study to improve the FrontRunner commuter rail service.

Supported by Fehr & Peers and Jacobs Engineering, LTK will provide the UTA with strategic planning insight, working primarily to address service reliability and ridership demands. Remi Barron, a spokesman for UTA, says the study is expected to be complete in approximately 15 months.

Serving 88 miles of Utah’s multimodal transportation network, FrontRunner provides service in Salt Lake City and connects 15 stations.

LTK plans to evaluate future growth scenarios for UTA, including conclusions regarding ridership, fleet requirements, capital improvements and operating costs. UTA officials hope to reduce FrontRunner’s travel time and improve reliability and ridership. LTK is expected to use its TrainOps® rail network simulation software to mimic current operations, near-term planned operations and long-range options for an improved FrontRunner system.

LTK officials say the TrainOps® rail network simulation software has been used to improve operations for more than 50 rail networks internationally, including use for streetcar, light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, high-speed rail and freight systems.
