Metro-North Railroad will launch an extensive three-year project to transform its White Plains station. The railroad said this work will improve the station's safety, appearance, cleanliness and accessibility.

The White Plains Station is located in two-track territory along a segment stretching nearly five miles between the Scarsdale area and North White Plains. Metro-North said this segment of track is the busiest portion of two-track railroad within its system, serving commuters with more than 200 weekday trains.

The project scope entails $94 million in investments in the station, such as revamped station entrances, new signage, platforms, energy efficient LED lighting, benches equipped with USB chargers, station dashboards and totems to provide convenient access to information and upgrades to customer restrooms, as well as Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity.

Officials said the station’s interior will get a face lift as well, with crews set to install new wall panels, ceiling tiles and fixtures.

Throughout the White Plains project, officials said one of the two tracks will be removed from service during weekend and off-peak hours to provide crews the proper access to the platforms so they can perform work safely.

Metro-North said during the first phase of improvements to the White Plains station, crews will also be rehabilitating track between Scarsdale and Hartsdale to prepare for plans to refurbish both stations in 2019. The rehabilitation work will also require off-peak single-tracking between Scarsdale and Hartsdale, officials said.

Crews will also need to replace switches along the line between Brewster and Southeast. The replacement work will entail single-tracking on weekends for three months for about 10 miles of track between Goldens Bridge and Southeast stations.

Off-peak service will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly to accommodate the track work, Metro-North said. Off-peak half-hourly service is set to return when the fall 2018 schedule debuts.
