Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the Rutherford Station project, which is part of an ongoing effort to support expanded GO Regional Express Rail (GO RER).

The RFQ is for interested parties to design, build and finance the station as the infrastructure upgrades are required to accommodate the planned GO Transit rail service expansion on the Barrie line. The scope of work includes a new, multi-level parking structure with integrated station building; the redesign of surface parking, kiss and ride, bus loop and pedestrian access; a grade separation on Rutherford Road; new rail platforms and full platform canopy and a second heavy rail track and provision for future third express center track.

Metrolinx explains that GO RER will provide faster, more frequent and more convenient transit service across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), but it requires major infrastructure updates that include adding track, modifying GO stations, improving crossings and work that will electrify the core segments of the GO rail network by 2024-25.

“The Rutherford Station project is critical to the overall improvements to GO transit and the delivery of the GO Regional Express Rail program. Our government recognizes the importance of these types of transit improvements because they keep people and goods moving, communities growing, and help build Ontario up,” said Ontario Minister of Infrastructure Bob Chiarelli.
