Siemens will provide the power infrastructure for the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) light-rail system's latest expansion, officials announced.

The Northgate and East Link lines are part of the transit authority’s expansion work, and Siemens is set to supply 13 traction power substations (TPSS), two medium voltage substations (MVSS), and one cross-passage tunnel tie station located along the Northgate and East Link. Seimens is also expected to fully integrate these additions into the existing infrastructure.

The company will also upgrade an existing substation that was supplied by Siemens in 2008, officials said.

The Northgate and East Link lines are scheduled to begin service in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

The new traction power stations are intended to improve Sound Transit’s efficiency and operations, allowing passengers a more convenient commuting experience, Siemens said.

“Siemens is proud of its role in helping Seattle manage its population and ridership growth through better and more reliable public transportation,” said Andreas Thon, vice president of Turnkey and Rail Electrification, North America. “Seattle fully appreciates the sustainability and operational benefits of having a strong traction power and electrification infrastructure and this is one reason why it is consistently considered one of the most sustainable cities in the world.”

Siemens has previously provided the same TPSS and MVSS substation infrastructure on the University Link and South Link lines, the company said. Sound Transit also tapped Siemens to deliver 152 new light-rail vehicles for the system, officials noted.
