As part of Metra's continued efforts to maintain and improve the quality and reliability of its service, a major tie replacement and track resurfacing project will begin August 17 on the Rock Island Line to Joliet.

Metra forces will be replacing 17,500 ties and resurfacing track over a nearly 25-mile stretch of the Rock Island Line between Blue Island and Joliet. Crews will be working seven days a week, with most of the work occurring between the weekday morning and evening rush hours to minimize impacts to passenger service.

“This project is a part of the regular maintenance necessary to keep our rail lines in the best condition possible. Tracks and ties are the foundation of the railroad and must be maintained or replaced on a regular basis,” said Metra Executive Director and Chief Executive Offiver Don Orseno. “While no one enjoys passing through a construction zone, riders will ultimately enjoy the benefits of a smoother ride and more reliable service.”
