UTA’s FrontRunner to Provo opens in December

The Utah Transit Authority officially announced an opening date of Monday, December 10, 2012, for the new FrontRunner Provo to Salt Lake City line. The new 45-mile commuter rail line is an extension of the FrontRunner Salt Lake City to Weber County line that opened in April 2008.
The public process will initially begin with a scoping period beginning in April. UTA will gather information through a series of public open houses, online and phone surveys, focus groups and the UTA website and social media networks. Information sought will include public preferences related to frequency, coverage, peak travel, weekend and evening service, fares, customer amenities and supporting services.
“We hope to get good participation at this early stage,” UTA General Manager Michael Allegra said. “Every comment received will help us better understand what Utah County citizens would like to see in their transit system.”
Following the scoping period, UTA will develop service plan scenarios based on public input and further system analysis. The service proposal will then be presented to the public for additional comment and refinement.
Construction on the FrontRunner Provo to Salt Lake City line is more than 90 percent complete. Testing of the new line is expected to begin this summer.
The completed line will feature stations in Murray, South Jordan, Draper, Lehi, American Fork, Orem and Provo, with a future station in Vineyard.
