Gov. Andrew Cuomo has introduced a proposal to invest $120 million in “state-of-the-art” improvements at 16 Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) stations and efforts to bolster system connectivity with the addition of a terminal at MacArthur Airport and a new stop at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Representatives say the infrastructure projects will provide needed support to strengthen the region amid its continued growth.

“These major, transformative investments in Long Island’s core infrastructure invest in the future resiliency and strength of the region,” Gov. Cuomo said. “Enhanced LIRR stations will connect further than they ever have before, and these vital water infrastructure projects will support environmental sustainability and bolster economic growth. With these projects, we equip Long Island with the tools and resources to drive commercial activity, create jobs and build a stronger Long Island for generations to come.”

Officials say in addition to Gov. Cuomo’s proposal to invest $120 million in enhancements to LIRR stations and related system connectivity, the New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority will fund $35 million of the investment.

$80 million will be invested in $5 million major enhancements at 16 critical LIRR stations to improve the customer experience. Upgrades to the stations are set to include new facilities, Wi-Fi, charging stations, public art, new platform waiting areas, general station renovations and improved signage. Each of the improvements made will be customized to the needs of the individual station.

A project valued at $20 million is set to add a stop on the LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch in the middle of Long Island’s innovation corridor at Brookhaven National Laboratory. An additional $20 million commitment will fund the development of a new terminal at MacArthur Airport to provide direct service to the LIRR.

The 16 stations are listed by county as follows:

  • Nassau County: Baldwin, Bellmore, Farmingdale, Great Neck, Merrick, Stewart Manor, Syosset and Valley Stream
  • Suffolk County: Brentwood, Deer Park, East Hampton, Northport, Ronkonkoma, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson and Wyandanch
