Gannett Fleming received a Distinguished Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey's (ACEC/NJ) annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition for its work on the Amtrak Security Improvements project.

To improve security at its stations, maintenance yards and shops, Amtrak utilized American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to enhance security systems at 11 locations in Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

To meet an aggressive schedule imposed by Congress as part of the ARRA requirements, Amtrak adopted a design-build project delivery approach, enabling the project team to complete the security installation within 11 months. Work included threat and vulnerability analysis; the installation of 600 security cameras; electronic entry control; physical access control elements, such as bollards, fencing and gating and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear analysis.

The camera surveillance systems utilized conventional, infrared and thermal imaging technologies. Existing camera systems also were integrated into the new systems.

Gannett Fleming worked with the prime consultant, G4S Technologies, a communication networks and security systems firm, to provide engineering and construction management services. The project was completed on schedule and $3 million under budget.
