Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito and Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Pollack joined Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse along with state and local officials Aug. 27 to celebrate the opening of the new $4.3-million Holyoke Train Station on the Knowledge Corridor and restoration of Amtrak Vermonter Line service.

The last Amtrak Vermonter train arrived at this stop in 1966.

The Knowledge Corridor Project enables Amtrak’s Vermonter train to again travel the historic Massachusetts passenger route between Springfield and East Northfield.
The project is funded through a Federal Railroad Administration grant to bring rail improvements in the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts and restores Amtrak’s Vermonter train service to the line, providing a more direct route, faster service and restored access to the cities of Greenfield and Northampton.

The Knowledge Corridor along Interstate 91 and the Connecticut River Valley extends from Vermont through Greenfield, Northampton, Springfield, Mass., to Hartford and New Haven, Conn., and takes its name from the important cultural, educational, business and medical facilities in the communities along the corridor.
