Bridge engineering firm Modjeski and Masters has been awarded a contract to complete engineering services needed for the rehabilitation and replacement of old portions of MetroTransit’s Union Station Tunnel in St. Louis, Mo.

The engineering work will better maintain an alignment used for Bi-State Development’s MetroLink commuter rail services and allow for continued access to 18th and Clark streets and nearby destinations including the St. Louis Union Station.

Representatives say the project calls for a construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) delivery model in which the preliminary design team will work with the CM/GC to produce contract documents and manage construction.

“The rehabilitation of the Union Station Tunnel presents several unique technical challenges,” said Michael F. Britt, PE, senior vice president and director of business development at Modjeski and Masters. “With extensive experience working with contractors on behalf of owners to streamline the construction process and deliver projects more efficiently, our expert project staff is uniquely positioned to address these challenges and help Metro complete this project on time and under budget.”

Since 2005, the firm has worked with Metro to complete inspections and repair work on the Union Station Tunnel. Throughout the past 10-plus years, Modjeski and Masters has become highly familiar with the system’s structure configuration, structural concerns and drainage problems. The firm is also aware of Metro’s safety concerns and desire to conduct work with minimal disruption to rail traffic, officials say.

The tunnel’s steel frame portion was originally constructed in 1902 by the Terminal Railroad Association and offered subway access for the 36 rail lines arriving at Union Station.
