Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) workers walked off the job early July 1 after negotiations for a new contract were not met.

Following decisions by its unions to go on strike, BART spokesperson, Rick Rice, said, “We have a long way to go, but we can’t get any closer if we aren’t at the table. We reached tentative agreements on 11 items today and we should use that momentum to reach a deal. Walking away doesn’t do any good.

The BART proposal provides an 8 percent wage increase over four years and a lower pension and healthcare participation.

“We regret to say that after waiting for hours, we’ve received no new proposals from BART,” said Josie Mooney, SEIU Local 1021 spokesperson. “A strike is always the last resort and we have done everything in our power to avoid it.”
